In 1963 Diem was Overthrown and murdered. As a result of this, the United States became more involved in Vietnam to stabilize the South Vietnamese government and prevent communism from spreading more throughout South Vietnam. In 1968, the Tet Offensive occurred. This was a surprise attack from the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese on South Vietnam cities. It took place on Lunar day which caught everyone off guard. North Vietnam achieved a victory with the Tet Offensive. After the attack the U.S lost war support back home, and many people were shocked by the graphic images they saw on T.V. LBJ later announces he is not running for president, and Nixon becomes president. In the 1970s South Vietnamese troops launch an attack against Cambodia. They begin pushing towards Vietcong Bases. In 1973 the Ceasefire goes into effect, to try to make peace and end the war. On April 30th of 1975 the fall of Saigon occurred. Saigon the capital of South Vietnam fell to North Vietnamese forces.
